How The Prey collects, uses, and protects your personal data, including location data, account information, and game activity.

The Prey is a GPS-based hide-and-seek game. Because the game tracks player locations in real time, we take your privacy seriously. This statement explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and the rights you have under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What Data We Collect

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Location Data
Location is the heart of The Prey, so it deserves special mention:
- GPS coordinates are collected only while you are taking part in an active game.
- Locations are shared with other players strictly according to the game rules (for example, Prey positions are broadcast to the Hunter throughout the game).
- When a game ends, live location sharing stops, and every GPS location collected during the game is permanently deleted from our servers within 48 hours.
- We do not track your location in the background outside of an active game.
Why We Process Your Data
We process your data to:
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- Run games, including real-time location tracking and notifications.
- Store the playfields and game history needed to replay and improve the experience.
- Maintain the security, stability, and performance of the service.
Our legal bases are the performance of a contract (providing the game you asked to play) and our legitimate interest in operating a secure, reliable service.
Who We Share Data With
We share data only with service providers that help us run The Prey:
- Authentication: our identity provider (Auth0) manages secure sign-in.
- Cloud hosting: our backend runs on Microsoft Azure within the European Union.
- Other players: during a game, limited gameplay data (such as your role and, where the rules allow, your location) is visible to other participants.
These providers process data on our behalf under agreements that require appropriate safeguards.
How Long We Keep Data
- Account data is kept for as long as your account exists.
- Game data, including each game’s player information, roles, tags, results, and every GPS location collected during play, is permanently deleted from our servers 48 hours after the game finishes.
- Diagnostic logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting.
When you delete your account, we remove or anonymise your personal data, except where we are legally required to retain it.
Your Rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Delete your data (“right to be forgotten”).
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Receive your data in a portable format.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@theprey.nl. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
Cookies
This website uses only the cookies and local storage needed to make the site and your sign-in work. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.
Changes to This Statement
We may update this privacy statement from time to time. The date at the top reflects the most recent change. Significant changes will be communicated through the app or website.
